Native to the Mediterranean basin, this shrubby heather grows naturally as a low shrub of up to 1m in exposed places, but can reach 2.5m in sheltered gardens. It grows on rocky slopes, in crevices in the rock and in pockets with little soil, varying its size according to its resources. Unlike most other plants in the family, Erica multiflora thrives in alkaline rather than acidic soils.
